The September 1868 revolution oponed up a period of public freedoms that the Republicans used to organize an enormous propaganda effort using all available means of expression. From late 1868 to 1874, one of the most important means was the performance of theatrical works for audiences that in large part were illiterate. Republican writers for the theater presented what they considered social injustices, those who suffered them, those who were to blame, and what the solutions were.
