Durante las últimas cuatro décadas, la historia de las mujeres y de género se ha consolidado como campo de investigación, colaborando a entender mejor el pasado, planteando nuevas preguntas, temas y metodologías. Pero esta rama de la historia ha sufrido ella misma importantes cambios. En este artículo evaluaremos su evolución desde los años setenta y miraremos hacia el futuro. Para ello, hemos invitado a cuatro reconocidos/ as especialistas en la materia a participar en una conversación online. Les hemos preguntado, entre otras cuestiones, sobre los logros alcanzados y los problemas enfrentados; sobre el concepto de género; sobre la legitimidad obtenida en el conjunto de la disciplina, así como sobre nuevas líneas de trabajo tales como la historia de las masculinidades.
Over the last four decades, women’s and gender history has flourished. Scholars of these two areas of research have collaborated to better understand the past, to renovate methodologies, and to introduce new questions, topics and lines of research. But the field has undergone profound changes. In this article, we will discuss its evolution since its emergence in the 1970s, and look toward future developments. In order to do so, Ayer has invited four renowned historians to participate in an online conversation. Among other things, we have asked them about achievements and challenges; whether the concept of gender has dissipated the subversive impetus of women’s history; and about its legitimacy within «mainstream» history. We have also surveyed their opinions on new avenues of historical inquiry such as masculinity studies.
